What Are They?
There are three parts to this type of restoration: a titanium screw, which is surgically placed in the jaw to create an artificial tooth root; a connector which connects the screw to the crown; and a crown, which is placed on top of the screw.
They can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or even a full mouth restoration. Because they fuse with your own jaw bone, they are strong and durable—the closest thing we have to natural teeth.
What to Expect
We’ll start with an examination and a CT scan. If there isn’t adequate bone to support the screw, a bone graft will be needed first. Once that is completely healed, which takes about 3 months, we’ll bring you back for your implant surgery.
A single tooth can be done in about an hour or two. You’ll be a little sore afterwards, but within a week or two you should be feeling fine. It takes about 3-4 months for the area to heal fully; once it does, we’ll place the crown.
Benefits
Unlike with a bridge, which requires us to remove tooth material from the teeth on either side of the missing tooth, this process does not affect adjacent teeth in any way. Since it’s permanent, it feels more natural and you can eat and speak normally.
You also care for them the same as your natural teeth.
