Dental Crowns in Sunrise
Helping you keep your smile healthy, functional and beautiful is our goal at Welleby Family Dental. We offer a wide array of restorative services, including dental crowns, to keep you smiling with confidence.
What Is It?
A dental crown is a protective covering over the entire surface of the tooth—like a suit of armor to protect a weakened tooth. It is custom-made to fit your tooth, typically using porcelain material.
Who Needs One?
This type of restoration is needed whenever a tooth has weakened and needs help to be functional, such as after a root canal therapy. When bacteria reaches the tooth root, the only options are typically a root canal or an extraction. With a root canal, we remove the bacteria and the tooth nerve. This allows us to save the tooth, but it is now considered a “dead” tooth since it has no nerve supply.
In this weakened condition, the tooth is susceptible to breaking down, so a crown is placed to protect it.
Another reason for placing this type of restoration is when a tooth has a large existing filling or fracture that undermines its structural integrity. Once again, it can protect the tooth and help prevent it from breaking or needing to be extracted.
What to Expect
We’ll begin with a thorough examination and any necessary X-rays. Dr. Juma will let you know what she finds and offer recommendations for treatment. She’ll answer all your questions so you can make an informed decision.
To make the crown, we first remove some material from the surface of your tooth. Then we take molds of the tooth and send these to the lab to fabricate your custom restoration. We will place a temporary in the meantime. Then, when your permanent restoration is ready, we’ll bring you back to place it and make sure it fits perfectly.
